UPDATE: COMICS COURSE AT KINGSTON SCHOOL OF ART!

COMIC COURSE CONCLUSION & RESPONSE

Colton Fox has concluded his comic course with Kingston School of Art and could not have had a more remarkable crop of students. The course ran 12 weeks from to September 14th to December 14th, 2023, at the Kingston School of Art.

With this course, Colton's goal was to eliminate barriers to creating comics while providing practical lessons in the craft. He aimed to inspire students of all levels, whether they are seasoned artists looking to enhance their skills, storytellers eager to express themselves through the medium of comics, or beginners drawing inspiration from pop culture. At the end of the course his students had each created a complete 12 page comic with printed copies to distribute how they liked.

Among Colton’s students was Canadian playwright John Lazarus who not only wrote a glowing review of Colton’s program but also published a recounting of his experience on his blog that can be read here.

Colton provided feedback forms for his students. One student wrote in their review:

"Your [Colton’s] teaching skills are impeccable; your passion for and insight on comics are apparent and shine in your teachings, your lessons are concise and digestible, and you have much patience for interruptions, distractions, and even heckling. Your passion is infectious as well; I've read more comics in just the past several weeks than I have in what feels like years, maybe ever!”

Another student wrote in response to what they have learned during this course:

“So much! A proper history of comic books, the importance of layout/thumbnails and a great re-introduction to colour theory and inking. Also, just a lot of industry tips and tricks that may get overlooked. Colton has a great eye for detail and simplicity, and how to apply both where it matters.”
